40319 GARDENIA CORNUTA RUB HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.00"Natal Gardenia" glossy narrow crimped leaves; fragrant spicy "Pinwheel" blossoms irregularly produced. Same odd angular boxy habit of G. thumbergii (the stems are at right angles mostly), but a different flower scent and odd orange fruit. This African native is used extensively for bonsai in Asia.

54115 GARDENIA [TABERNAEMONTANA] DIVARICATA [HORT] VARIEGATA APO TGH PRICE: $ 25.00 Considered a selection of the "Paper Gardenia" with handsome leathery paired leaves brilliantly bordered in ivory white. While the nomenclature ( this may be an Ervatamia species) is poor, the shrub is stunning both in foliage and fragrant blossoms.

< 58430 GARDENIA JASMINOIDES [AUGUSTA] AUGUST BEAUTY RUB CGH HP PRICE: $ 5.25 A look-a-like for Gardenia 'Mystery.' Double white large fragrant blossoms produced seasonally; always the florist's favorite, thus in the clan generally called "Corsage Grandiflora" growing to be a stout shrub with rich glossy green quilted foliage. Asian herb for perfume oils; for also treating colds & coughs! If located in a low humidity situation the flower buds will drop before opening; in fact, any major change in location while in bud can result in the blossoms aborting so find a cool very bright spot and LEAVE it there.

40321 GARDENIA JASMINOIDES RADICANS FLOREPLENO RUB HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.00 "Dwarf Gardenia" Low shrub with tidy glossy dark green leaves paired on much-branched stems to beautifully frame lovely fragrant double white blooms; unlike florist types, this produces a few fls at a time, but throughout the year. Easy as a windowsill potplant; excellent as a low statured bonsai subject developing excellent bark and maintaining petite blackish green foliage, both important characteristics for such an undertaking.

42004 GARDENIA JASMINOIDES RADICANS MARGINED RUB HP CGH PRICE: $18.00 Marvelous "Margined Mini Gardenia" Low petite shrub, which prefers a cool winter location, aflutter with pairs of small narrow waxy leaves, each boldly bordered waxy ivory white; lovely hauntingly fragrant white rose shaped blossoms. If grown indoors, we suggest you place on a pebble tray to maintain constant humidity levels. A seriously beautiful plant.

58357 GARDENIA JASMINOIDES (AUGUSTA) VARIEGATED RUB CGH PRICE: $ 22.00 Very striking "Glacier Gardenia" with broad glossy leaves margined a rich ivory yellow fading to white on woody upright stem presenting quite fragrant single white blossom--do not move this while in bud as typically the flower buds will abort and drop before opening. This is much prized by collectors--bright light and good humidity are imperative, thus best as a hobby greenhouse or conservatory plant.

58403 GARDENIA JASMINIOIDES [VEITCHII] YASHIOKA RUB TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 Also known as "Aimee Gardenia" with dark green crinkly leaves with broad parchment toned central variegarion sometimes further enhanced with a central flame of emerald green. Lovely white flowers; vigorous wide shrub. The original name is "Aimee Yoshioka" and is named for the sister of Paul Yoshioka (one of our customers). It was developed by his father Tadaoki Yoshioka. Certainly one of the crown jewels of variegated tropical shrubs.

41817 GARDENIA JASMINOIDES (AUGUSTA) KLEIM'S HARDY RUB CGH HH PRICE: $ 8.00 Cultivar of "Cape Jasmine" selected for tolerance of cooler winters than the species. Quite prolific blooming with many fragrant single flowers reaching a peak in early summer. Southern California customers report the bloom flush to peak during December for them. Reports and rumors still wildly vary as to how far north this is reliably root hardy. Certainly January 2010 will constitute a major test.

58428 GIBASIS [TRADESCANTIA] GENICULATA [MULTIFLORA] COMM HP PRICE: $ 5.00 A great Wandering Jew relative and an old-fashioned plant grown by people from Victorian times onward. A Jamaican native naturally marketed widely as "Tahitian Bridal Veil." Great show of sprays of tiny white flowers accenting the dense hanging basket growth. This tiny leaved spiderwort grows well in practically any environment with bright light and adequate humidity.

This clone of "Ground Ivy" or "Alehoof" has bright white margins on each leaf. Green reversions can be invasive; do NOT allow reversions to proliferate (even if American Indians used it for medicinal purposes). Also popular in hanging baskets and windowboxes for its dramatic cascading abilities.

20494 GLOXINIA ARION [HYB] GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 Stout rosy magenta tinted stems with G. perennis type foliage topped by wide slipper flowers flaring into a bell of rich magenta with spotted throat, somewhat fragrant. Batcheller hybrid. Dormancy cycles seem somewhat random over the years--constant warmth can nearly eliminate the cycle but may eventually reduce the vigor of the plant.

"Christmas Slippers" This is a select evergreen clone with narrow felted dark leaves closely ranked, nearly obscuring the stiff cascading stems; topped with many red-orange slim guppy-mouthed blossoms during the winter months. Excellent houseplant; even when not in bloom the attractive foliage is evergreen and attractive all seasons.

Excellent container plant; try as a tropical bosai. A Genus from India on through the Philippines. Availability can be spotty--best to check before ordering as we do not like to send this out during its dormant cycles.

30730 GONATOPUS BOIVINII ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 18.00 Large Central American species producing a large tuber from which arises an impressive thick snakeskin colored stalk, with a distinctive central pulvinus (movable joint), topped with three branched foliage; tall showy white-cream flowers. Typically summer dormant in our experience, thus the opposite cycle to its Asian cousins the Amorphophallus species. Difficult to ship while in foliage which is quite fragile and easily damaged, so best inquire before ordering if you need this by a certain time.

Typically featured in Australian plant books as Graptophyllum 'Bronze Variegata.' Newly popular along with its Pseuderanthemum kith & kin as an outdoor summer container subject; yet far more sensitive to chill than the Pseuderanthemums.

50026 GRAPTOPHYLLUM PICTUM WAIMEA ACAN TGH HP PRICE: $ 5.00 Cultivar of "Caricature Plant" with shocking pink colored midrib; while traditionally a dramatic foliar subject for hobby greenhouse or the indoor plant room, now a new star in outdoor urns as container gardeners become more daring in their designs. Sensitive to chill--but does easily resprout foliage if not actually frozen. This seems to be regularly renamed by southern nurseries, where can be offered as a Pseuderanthemum or even an Odontonema.

54084 GREVILLEA ROBUSTA PRO HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.50 Reliable "Silky Oak Tree" from Queensland a popular ferny leaved potplant; when planted outdoors in Z10 or warmer can become a small tree with orange flowers. Japanese value this as a bonsai, "Kinu-kashi" as evidentally can be easily trained.

50027 GYMNOSTACHYUM CEYLANICUM ACAN TERR TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 "Ceylon Plant" Choice miniature of low habit with dark green laquered leaves pewter veined and ribbed white. A treasure from Shri Lanka considerably smaller than its Latin name.

40325 GYNURA AURANTIACA COMP CGH PRICE: $ 6.25 AVAILABILITY MAY BE LIMITED "Velvet Plant" Erect thick somewhat succulent stems (seldom branching, thus solitary) studded with large soft leaves with rich purple plush hairs if given very bright light; thus called also the "Purple Passion Tree." Resents summer heat; yet also intolerant of winter chill; thus, best grown in a warm winter greenhouse/conservatory situation. Definitely not a houseplant nor an outstanding (predictable?) patio subject like the other species--but so unique we feel we do need to offer it to collectors who appreciate a good challenge. Not for the easily exhasperated grower. The upright stems may topple with time or with sheer lack of backbone, so best to stake early on. The species name gives a firm clue as to the rayed flowers' hue.

40326 GYNURA BICOLOR (CREPEOIDES) COMP HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.25 What we are offering may be Gynura crepeoides, a distinct species. What we are sending is pictured in the first four pictures. Prostrate stems with deep velour leaves, purple beneath, from swollen root surface; Underated species from the Molluccas excellent in wintertime greenhouse baskets; equally at home cascading from windowboxes or urns in your summertime outdoor plantings. As eager and willing to grow and impress as aurantiaca is willing to disappoint! Too many extra trimmings or cuttings? Don't toss as herbalists consider this species to be a good source of vitamens and "other" nutrients. The last two pictures are of an alternative form of Gynura that we sometimes offered as Gynura bicolor in the past. They both seem to go under this name.

56571 GYNURA SARMENTOSA PINK ICE COMP CGH PRICE: $10.00 The marginal variegation of this "Purple Passion" selection emerges a glaucous pink in bright cool locations, hardening to a paler cream (with a violet hue) than the similar clone known as 'aureo-variegata.' Limited during warmer part of the year as is difficult to produce then. One of the more dramatic variegated vines for its favorite site, the hobby greenhouse. Absolutely not a houseplant (although several customers with grolites report considerable success). Needs bright light, reliable moisture (but avoid foliar humidity unless you provide good air circulation), and perfect drainage--a serious test of your skills as a gardener.

51045 HABRANTHUS ROBUSTUS RUSSEL MANNING AMARYL CGH HP PRICE: $ 5.50 Select small evergreen bulb, a close cousin of the more familiar "Agentine Rain Lily" with clear magenta petals fading to a delicate lilac-purple. Now considered H. estensis by some. Evergreen waxy strap foliage is evergreen when situated in the conservatory/greenhouse; best to bind the succulent roots in a shallow pot to encourage heavy bloom production; needs full sun.

51047 HAEMANTHUS ALBIFLOS PUBESCENS AMARYL HP CGH PRICE: $ 28.00 Ciliate-margined evergreen leaves with downy leaf surfaces; "White Paint Brush" flowers presented on top of short thick stems, mid winter. Some sources relegate this to just H. albiflos, yet we find this to be easier to grow and to bloom, more attractively foliaged, and slightly more compact than the species form; This Amaryllis cousin must have bright light and good air movement at all time to flourish--perfect for that spot which is just a bit too sunny for your Clivia.

40329 HAEMARIA DISCOLOR DAWSONIANA ORC HP TERR PRICE: $ 12.50 "Jewel Orchid" Black leaves veined in coral; fragrant cream mini-orchid fls with pinkish bracts. Best in humid terrarium environments, yet we have observed beautiful old specimens grown on indoor windowsills and splendidly colored, heavily bloomed specimens grown under artifical lights. Also called Ludisia discolor in the older plantbooks.

41994 HEDERA HELIX BRAZIL ARAL HP CGH HHPRICE: $ 4.00 Very bright "English Ivy" discovered in Brazil's Rio plant markets by George Johnson: glaucous green leaves variously lobed, unlobed, trilobed with irregular ashy cream splotches and raised veins. Small enough in stature to be quite successful in terrarium and wardian case designs. Variegated but not necessarily margined! Tolerates heat as well as winter chill, remaining unique even in the vast array of Ivy cultivars.

41159 HEDERA HELIX BUTTERCUP ARAL HP HH CGH PRICE: $ 5.75 "Golden English Ivy" Glossy new leaves a bright yellow, fading to a deep leathery green--sometimes a bit of tip pruning helps this reliable golden workhouse more quickly branch to fully cover a wall or topiary form. Most remarkably the leathery foliage does not burn in our Zone 6b winter, even when cloaking a concrete block wall. Also known as `Golden Cloud' in Europe.

59279 HEDERA HELIX CHIMAERA ARAL HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Only sport we've seen with the combination of two distinct variegation types: the several toned gray & cream areas overlaid with dramatic white veins & overall constelation of fine speckling (like 'Fantasia'); varies from leaf to leaf and strand to strand.

41161 HEDERA HELIX CONGLOMERATA ARAL HP HH CGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Undulating leathery, blackish green leaves clasp stiff, often contorted, upright stems; forms semi-erect bush with time. The wavy (heart-shaped at base) leathery leaves survive our winter unscathed if situated away from winter sun and wind. Constitutes a long term project for has a slow deliberate growth rate compared to more typical clambering Ivies.

41162 HEDERA HELIX CONGLOMERATA ERECTA ARAL HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.00 Nearly triangular, dark green leaves deeply grooved; the unique three-cornered leaves are held rigidly in two ranks on stiff erect stems. Quite evergreen when used as an extremely slow growing shrublet in Zone 6 like us. Certainly develops one of the most unique (very extreme decorator) vertical outlines of any Ivy, all the more dramatic due to the extremely dark toned very leathery foliage. A wonderful pot plant for that chill windowsill too cold for violets or begonias. Requires patience.

41173 HEDERA HELIX GOLD HEART ARAL HP CGH HH PRICE: $ 5.25 Small black-green leaves centered yellow; this is an unusually winter tolerant variety, surviving in Michigan. Unlike most ivies, this ancient cultivar plods along up the wall without branching unless you pinch out the lead tip--thus more labor intensive than other winter hardy types; and thus never recommended as a ground cover. Usually is known in England as `Golden Jubilee.'

66851 HEDERA HELIX GUILDED HAWKE ARAL HH CGH PRICE: $ 5.75 Deeply fingered, handsomely ruffled pale pewter green leaves with showy buttery margins hardening to rich ivory. Slow growing 'Manda's Crested' selection always worth its space in the collection; will burn in our type winter outdoors, yet the stems survive to resprout.

41176 HEDERA HELIX HARALD ARAL HP CGH PRICE: $ 3.00 Large new leaves emerge nearly white; fading to a pattern, usually a wide creamy green margin, then dark hydroponic green with age--very thin textured, thus best grown in a greenhouse. Often offered as `Harold.' Narrower leaves than `Anne Marie.'

41691 HEDERA HELIX HELENA ARAL HP CGH PRICE: $4.00 (AIS) Deeply lobed leaves of slate green and gray richly margined in parchment white. Forms thick lacy mound--the narrow star shaped lobes, with prominent curved tip, create a feathery filigree effect.

55613 HEDERA HELIX HENRIETTE ARAL HH TERR HP PRICE: $ 7.25 See 1995 Ivy Jorunal, Vol 21, pp 19. Heavily textured extremely small elongated leaves with irregular variegation. At first view does not seem to be an Ivy as the shingled frosted leaves are softly lobed, if lobed at all. Has proven to be quite winter hardy here in Ohio if situated out of winter sun and out of any possibility of chill wind. A more perfect terrarium plant cannot be imagined.

Beautiful "Hummingbird Ivy" noted for unusually strong contrast of dark flecks on snowy white & ochre mosaic leaves of very strong texture.
