Plants are shipped when ready or at best time for planting. Unless specified, we ship established starter plants typically in 2 3/4" to 3 1/2" plastic pots; some items such as Hoyas, some Bromeliads, Epiphyllums and Rhipsalis are sent as mossed unrooted cuts (as they travel and reestablish best this way); dormant bulbs may be shipped out of pots depending on the season ordered. Various hardy items may be shipped in liter size pots. No items are shipped totally bareroot. Typically, foreign orders must be washed & mossed. depending on the country, and require special shipping charges. (Not included are several vendors from whom we buy new items.) We hope we've not missed anyone whose name has disappeared into a blaze of obscurity. We appreciate any correction, suggestion, or emendations you can offer on the nomenclature, physical descriptions (such as flower scent, or leaf color) or on the winter hardiness of plants offered by this catalogue--many past observations are now incorporated in this year's descriptions. In the horticulturally spiritual sensibility voiced unwittingly by Gerard Manley Hopkins, "Glory be to God for dappled things," we do need to emphasize that most of these plant friends mentioned above are enthusiasts of variegated plants, a passion that Glasshouse Works partakes in also.

On Visiting the Glasshouse Works We remind those of you who are planning to visit the gardens & nursery this year that our hours are now FRIDAY and SATURDAY from 10AM to 6PM. Our faithful core of customers--many of whom have been our support group for some 30 years now--rely on our extremely wide diversity of plants, most of which we keep in production with few interruptions. This involves major blocks of hours--far more than maintaining only the two or three hundred items in stock characteristic of glossy photo catalogue companies. With the mushrooming emphasis on incorporating tropicals in the temperate zone garden, the renewed interest in terrariums, the serious plantings of troughs and the amazing number of new hobby greenhouses springing up in ancient baby boomer backyards due to menopausal nesting urges-- many of our traditional conservatory items are in much greater demand; also, with the internet many impressively intense new plant collectors have found us from all over the world. We have, resultingly, major increased demands on production time and in shipping time. We trust you appreciate the arithmetic of this and honor our need of more hours to keep up propagation, finishing, pulling, wrapping, & shipping these thousands, not dozens, of plant offerings without exhausting our staff & while maintaining our own stab at sanity. Although we all enjoy meeting our faithful customers, you arrived in such numbers in previous years that we lost significant hours needed to keep up with our mailorder schedule. We cannot survive another Spring of eight day weeks; thus Thursday will remain another mailorder day until Tom can accept special appointments Summer & Fall. Nonetheless, as usual a rich variety of hardy, aquatic, trough & tropical plants (with many non-catalogue items) will be available at the walk-in nursery, as will pots, fountains, sandstone art, original granite art, statuary, bonsai pots, & even fabulous wardian cases, potting soil, specialty fertilizers, rooting Hormone gel, orchid mix, etc. However, we can no longer even pretend that most of the items in this catalogue will be featured in the walk-in nursery area as many catalogue items very likely will have all available pots completely pre-ordered by our mail order customers--mail order customers who have already paid for these plants and for whom they are reserved absolutely from the arrival time of their initial order. Access to permanent collection & production greenhouses will be restricted in the spring, as far too many mail order customers' orders were compromised by those who promised not to touch . . . but well, you know . . . I really didn't intend to misplace that tag . . . and I thought I put that pot back in the same flat . . . However, a new greenhouse is devoted to housing a wide range of rare & distinctive tropicals & subtropicals for you to choose from with the able assistance Connie, Doug and other staff members who might just have escaped the shipping house for an hour; another display area developed last summer to make available far more succulents to the visiting customer. The winter hardy perennial & shrub area seems to be spilling on into the new lot (not in the masterplan!) . . . We are not restricting our open days to a smattering of weekends, as most nurseries similar to us do; nonetheless, we must become more realistic about the amount of stamina and basic mental health we have on reserve.
